Since August of 2017, more than 620,000 Rohingya people have escaped Myanmar in what the United Nations has called ethnic cleansing. The Rohingya do not have citizenship, cannot own property and are considered Muslim interlopers in a Buddhist-majority state. Even Pope Francis refrained from using the word “Rohingya” in fear of further inflaming sectarian violence on his visit to Myanmar. The Rohingya who inhabit the Rakhine state of Myanmar were estimated to number 1 million before the mass exodus. “I Am Rohingya” documents the Rohingya crisis during my recent trip to Bangladesh.
