Members of the Mogadishu police department’s bomb squad train some dogs to sniff out explosives at the airport on the beach in the green zone, a secure area by the airport. The dogs will be used to deter potential threats. In early 2016 a terrorist managed to sneak a laptop bomb past the X-ray machine and detonate it on the plane killing himself. The plane was able to return to the airport because it had not reached cruising altitude where it would have set off a catastrophic chain of events.
